Blood Screening Tests

The link between oral and systemic health is being strengthened each day by new and ongoing research.

Periodontal or Gum Disease may be associated with an increased risk of:

  • Heart attacks
  • Diabetes
  • Pre-term birth
  • Pancreatic cancer
    • Stroke
    • Alzheimer's disease
    • Lung disease
    • Colon cancer
    • Rheumatoid Arthritis
    • Systemic inflammation
    • Osteoporosis
    • Prostate cancer

Dentists today are able to have a significant impact in helping patients live longer and healthier lives that extend far beyond beautiful smiles.  In our office, when indicated, we will use a few blood droplets from a simple fingerprick to screen for possible underlying and perhaps undetected systemic conditions.  All the tests are FDA approved and may include:

    • A Full-panel cholesterol
    • Diabetes Risk Assessment (instant glucose, HbA1C)
    • High-sensitivity C-Reactice Protein (hs-CRP)

    Oral Cancer Screening

    VELscope_clinical_p

Oral cancer kills one person every hour of every day in the United States alone.  It can be found in the floor of the mouth, cheeks, tongue, gingiva, lips and throat.  Nearly half of oral cancer patients die within five years of diagnosis.  It is 80-90% curable if diagnosed and treated early.  Unfortunately, only 35% of oral cancers are diagnosed in the early stages.

Future of Dentistry uses the VELscope, an FDA approved device offering the latest in oral cancer screening technology.

    tss_p

There are over 20 million Americans who suffer from severe migraine headaches.  Studies have shown that people who suffer from migraine and tension headaches clench their teeth while sleeping on average 14 times harder compared to the control group. Many people who clench their teeth while sleeping awaken every morning with varying degrees of headache pain acccompanied by neck, temple, and jaw pain.

The device we use is called NTI-tss.  It is a simple neuromuscular device , custom fitted and worn on the front teeth while you sleep. In clinical trials, it has proven to reduce migraine headaches in 82% of those using it.

    Snoring and Sleep Apnea

Recent research has developed a simple and safe anti-snoring device to reduce or even eliminate snoring.  The device is similar to a mouthpiece and works to position the lower jaw forward as you sleep.  The tongue, being attached to the lower jaw is simultaneously pulled forward thus not allowing it to fall back as easily into the throat to block the airways and cause snoring.

Obstructive sleep apnea is a breathing disorder that can in some cases lead to life threatening incidents such as heart irregularities and stroke. People with this disorder actually stop breathing at night due to airway blockage by a relaxed tongue.  When the breathing stops carbon dioxide builds up in the blood stream.  At this point the brain is alerted and the eerie silence is followed with a gasping, snorting sound.  Each episode lasts long enough so that one or more breaths are missed and the episodes occur repeatedly during sleep.  Sleep apnea is diagnosed with an overnight sleep test called a polysomnogram or a "sleep study".
